This genomic region represents a DNase I hypersensitive site that is located in the embryonic gene region of the beta-globin gene cluster, between the Hbb-bh0 and Hbb-bh1 genes in the \'diffuse\' haplotype, or the Hbb-y and Hbb-bh1 genes in the \'single\' haplotype. It functions as an embryonic stage-specific enhancer in erythroid cells. Deletion of this region at its endogenous location results in significant decreases in embryonic beta-globin gene expression, and in embryonic domain-wide loss of histone acetylation patterns.
