This region contains multiple DNase I hypersensitive sites that overlap with promoters and other regulatory regions for the MPO (myeloperoxidase) gene. These sequences can be activated by granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and suppressed by interleukin 3. The P1 promoter binds HMG-box transcription factor 1, while the NF-Y heterotrimer interacts with an upstream regulatory element. In vivo transcription occurs predominantly through the P1 promoter.
